Privacy Policy

This site has no accounts and no logins. We do not want your personal data and we collect as little of it as we can while still knowing which articles are worth writing.

Who is responsible

Wabi Sabi Made is an independent site published by Shoki Satake, based in Japan. It is operated by an individual, not a company. For data protection purposes, that individual is the data controller. You can reach us at hello@wabisabimade.com.

What we collect

Server logs

This site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical request data — IP address, browser and device type, requested page, referring page, and timestamp — in order to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks and abuse. We use this only in aggregate and do not attempt to identify individual visitors from it.

Analytics

We may use third-party analytics services, such as Google Analytics and similar providers, to understand which articles people read and where they arrive from. These services typically record pages viewed, approximate location, device type, and the referring site or campaign, and may use cookies or similar technologies to do so.

At present that service is Google Analytics 4.

For visitors in the EU, the UK, and Switzerland, analytics storage is switched off by default: no analytics cookies are set, and only aggregated, cookieless measurement is sent. For visitors elsewhere, Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (named _ga and similar) that distinguish one browser from another for up to two years. IP addresses are anonymised. We have not enabled Google's advertising features, and we do not use this data to build advertising profiles.

You can opt out entirely with Google's browser add-on, or by blocking analytics in your browser or an extension. Nothing on this site breaks if you do.

Advertising

This site may carry advertising, and may use third-party advertising services to deliver it. Where that happens, those services may use cookies or similar technologies to measure and select what is shown. As of the date above we run no advertising of any kind, and any advertising we do run will be identifiable as such.

Search Console

We use Google Search Console to see which search queries lead to this site. Search Console reports on Google's own search data and places no tracking code on these pages, so it collects nothing from your visit here.

Affiliate links

Some outbound links are affiliate links (see our Affiliate Disclosure). When you click one, you leave this site and the destination retailer — and the affiliate network that runs its programme — may set a cookie in your browser to record that the referral came from us. That cookie is set by them, on their terms, and we cannot read it. We do not receive your name, address, or payment details from any purchase; we see only anonymous totals of clicks and orders.

Our outbound links pass through a /go/ address on this domain so we can keep links up to date in one place and count how often each is used. That step records nothing about you beyond the standard server log described above.

What we do not collect

  • No accounts, passwords, or profiles.
  • No email addresses, except one you choose to write to us from.
  • No payment information — nothing is sold on this site.
  • We do not collect the special categories of data — racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religion, health, biometric or genetic data, trade union membership, or criminal history — and have no use for them.
  • We do not sell or share personal information.

Email you send us

If you write to us, we keep the message and your address for as long as needed to deal with it — and, for corrections, as part of the record of how an article was changed. We do not add you to any list.

Where your data goes

The site is operated from Japan and served from Cloudflare's global network, so request data is processed outside your country, including in the United States. The processors we currently rely on are listed below; if we add or change one, this list changes with it.

  • Cloudflare — hosting, delivery, and security (privacy policy).
  • Google — analytics and Search Console (privacy policy).
  • Affiliate networks and retailers — only once you click an outbound link, and only under their own policies.

Your rights

If you are in the EU, the UK, or Switzerland, the GDPR gives you the right to ask what data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to object to processing, and to complain to your national data protection authority. Where we process technical data to keep the site running and to understand what to write next, we do so on the basis of legitimate interest.

If you are a California resident, the CCPA/CPRA gives you the right to know what is collected, to have it deleted, and to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of, and we will never charge you a different price for exercising any of these rights.

In practice we hold almost nothing that identifies you. Write to hello@wabisabimade.com and we will act on any of the above within the time limits the applicable law requires.

Children

This site is written for adults buying kitchen tools and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes — a new analytics tool, a new category of data — are described here.
